On my visit to the Dolomites Mr S and I were lucky enough to dine at La Stüa de Michil in the luxurious hotel La Perla Corvara. This gourmet restaurant was awarded its first Michelin star in 2002.

The decor is based on the local Ladin culture, very quaint and like dining in a well dressed mountain cabin. The dimly lit room creates a cosy and intimate atmosphere.

I loved the touches of fresh flowers and our name on the table. Simple but elegant.

We decided to give the tasting menu a miss and went à la carte. With the menus we were offered a complimentary glass of champagne which was lovely touch.

The amuse bouche was a spongy cake filled with stracciatella soaked in tomato water with a refreshing basil sorbet. It was quite large as amuse bouches go and took a fair few spoonful to finish, nevertheless rather tasty.

After a full-on day in the mountains and a rather hectic evening routine with the girls before the babysitter arrived. Mr S and I were ravenous, so dived straight into the hot selection of breads which followed.

My starter was adapted for my vegetarian palette – a beetroot risotto with goats cheese, which would usually come adorned with scampi.

Now the menu neglected to mention that the cheese was blue and I must confess blue cheese isn’t a Pixie staple. A first, I did really enjoy the dish as the blue cheese helped to cut straight through the sweetness of the beetroot.

Mr S went for a low key starter – summer salad of vegetables from Aspinger.

My main was an organic egg described as 63/40 with rye bread, creamy tree milk, morels and bulbs. The egg being cooked at precisely 63 centigrade for 40 minutes. It made for a very runny and tasty egg.

Mr S ordered the sole fillet, with watermelon, seaweed, pea and mint purée. A lovely dish but once again personal taste got in the way a little. The fish he loved but the combination with sweet fruit less so.

Dessert was a delicious and light affair for me, named Rosa. A plate of strawberries in every which way you can imagine – fresh, freeze-dried and powered. Along with rhubarb, the creamiest yoghurt topped with tested almonds and meringue.

The combination of all the different textures was superb. I was in strawberry heaven.

Mr S couldn’t resist the Italian cheese plate accompanied with honey from the Dolomites and hoovered it in super speed time.

Surrounded by the old style wooden hut decor, chandeliers, and the relaxing, elegant ambience. Mr S and I were lapping up the romantic air of the restaurant. We loved the modern twists on Ladin dishes. If venturing in these parts I’d definitely recommend a visit.

I was even treated to a departing gift. A beautifully painted clay hanging decoration. It’s little touches like these which really make a restaurant stand out. I’ll forever remember this Michelin star restaurant in Italy, especially when it comes round to decorating my Christmas tree!
