Warner Bros Abu Dhabi: Does it live up to the hype?

Your all-time favourite superheroes and favourite cartoon characters now have a new home in a desert. Yes, that’s right, Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi is a 750 million pound playground on Yas Island and is one of the biggest ever indoor theme parks. Trust me, this place will get the whole family excited!

Places to visit in Abu Dhabi

In a country where temperatures can rocket, it’s the perfect place to escape to the six ‘air-conditioned’ immersive worlds. Explore Bedrock with The Flintstones, hunt down Superman in Metropolis, roam around Batman’s Gotham City and meet Bugs Bunny in Cartoon Junction.

The epicentre of the theme park is the Warner Bros. Plaza, an Art-Deco-inspired land which reveries the Golden Age of Hollywood.

Here, you’ll find the main shopping area and a range of themed dining experiences. It’s also where your exploration to the different lands begins.

Oh and don’t forget to look up, the impressive huge video-screen roof creates a dynamic moving sky which can transform the area from day into night. It’s also where a lot of the characters hang out, so prepare for a stampede of kids when they make an appearance.

With 29 rides across six lands to get through, we wasted no time on arrival. We started our adventure in the modern stone age, fondly known as Bedrock. I think I  was just as excited as the girls wandering around the home of the Flintstones and the Rubbles. Pretty cool living out my childhood memories.

We jumped straight on The Flintstones Bedrock River Adventure, a scenic ride where you’re fully immersed in the life of the famous cartoon. And getting wet is the order of the day.

In Dynamite Gulch you’ll find Wile. E Coyote and the Road Runner with an opportunity to be part of the chase on the Fast and Furry-ous ride. The ACME Road Rocket 9000 is Wile E. Coyote’s latest invention.

Once inside, the adventurous and fast chase for the Road Roadrunner zips through a recreated desert. Slightly ironic, considering you only need to step outside…and voila – Desert!

Be warned, there is a height restriction, children have to be 1.1 metres to board the ride. There were tears as Asha didn’t quite hit the mark. They didn’t last long. Daddy came to the rescue to whisk her off to the wacky futuristic world of the Jetsons – leaving the thrill-seekers to get their rollercoaster fix on.

Soon we meandered to the land of bright blue skies, fluffy white clouds and colourful houses, known as Cartoon Junction. Where all your childhood memories of the whimsical world of cartoons are truly brought to life.

There were giggles aplenty on the Tom And Jerry Swiss Cheese Spin ride, as we whizzed around in a car shaped like a wedge of cheese. We also brushed up on our whodunnit skills on a paranormal adventure with Scooby-Doo and the gang at the Museum of Mysteries.

In stark contrast, dark alleys lead you to the urban landscape of Gotham City – Home of the Dark Knight. Be ready to bump into many of your favourite Batman super-villains such as The Joker and Harley Quinn causing chaos.

When we stepped into the world of Batman’s main villain through the Joker Funhouse, we actually couldn’t find a way out of the hall of mirrors (until help came – very embarrassing to admit). For all ages, the shrinking corridor, moving carpets and hallucination hallway kept us very amused.

Another height restriction ride and one of my favourites is the Riddler Revolution. Set in a creepy, dark warehouse, the roundabout rollercoaster sends you up into a dizzying spin. It’s one not to miss. I’m just glad I have a rollercoaster buddy now! Radha was blown away by it.

Quite a few of the rides in Gotham city are aimed at slightly older children, but there are plenty of fairground attractions which will keep the younger ones happy.

Last but not least we ventured into ultimate superhero territory – Metropolis! The modern, cosmopolitan city features a glorious artificial sky of eternal sunset. The heroes of the Justice League and Teen Titans are the stars of this superhero world.

There’s also a chance to be a member of the Justice League team through the Justice League: Warworld Attacks ride, which is an immersive 5D theatre experience. Featuring some amazing special effects, it’s an incredible experience where you fight to save the planet with Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the rest of the earth’s superheroes. Can it get any better than this?!

Another brilliant flying theatre experience ride in 4D is the Green Lantern: Galactic Odyssey where you join Hal Jordan and his interstellar peacekeepers protecting the universe. Some parts could prove to be a little scary, so children under 1.3 metres should be accompanied. It didn’t bother my two, they wanted to go back for more.

The park is definitely a family must. Tickets can be purchased online in advance with a 6-month validity or purchased on the day. A single-day ticket costs 295AED, Junior (3 years+ but under 1.1m) is  230AED and under 3s are free. I’d say the park is aimed at kids 11 years and younger. Mainly as there aren’t as many adrenaline-fuelled rides compared to other theme parks. Although, Mr S and I completely released our inner child on our visit and probably had as much fun as the girls. What sets it apart from regular theme parks is the immersive experience that transports you to different worlds. One thing is for sure, you’ll have a YABBA-DABBA-DOO time!
